Movies created the path and opportunity to exercise their natural talents and gain prominence, fame and popularity. And amongst the lots that kept emerging, a numbered few stood out and began to set a new standard of their own.
Not only did they hold on to qualitative acting standards, they were conscious of their personal appearance which brewed a niche for fashion. Indeed, Nollywood ladies seize the show that’s for sure! On screen or off screen we can’t take our eyes off these ladies but as their fashion slaps us back to reality, we are reminded that these stars are just like us; everyday women who try to look good but with wardrobe malfunctions every now and again..
What is your grade for these ladies?

Time and time again, Tonto seems to be at the centerpiece of the most controversies that pop out. Before she recovers from one scandal or controversy, she is neck deep into another.
With all these however, Tonto Dikeh seems not to be bothered by her name being a constant headline for all the wrong reasons.
A close source to Tonto recently reveals to us that the controversial status of the actress is deliberate on her part.
According to the source, who chose to remain anonymous;
Tonto feels that no matter how hard she or any of her peers for that matter works, they could never keep in line with the likes of Genevieve or Omotola and for that reason she had to find a way to keep up with fame and relevance in the industry.
This is why she has chosen to toe the controversial path and from the look of things it is definitely paying-off for her.

Six months after the court threw out the case he instituted against the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria (AGN) Board of Trustees over the election of Segun Arinze as the association’s president, Emeka Ike has returned to the court room.
Emeka Ike’s case was struck out in March, on technical grounds.
He had gone to court to challenge the leadership of Segun Arinze as the AGN president. His case was struck out in March on technical grounds.
Unsatisfied with the judgment, the actor in a dramatic turn, returned to the court on Monday with the matter coming up at the Federal High court. But unfortunately, the absence of the judge who was said to be indisposed stalled the resumption of hearing of the new application filed in by the actor.
Emeka’s counsel, Malcolm Omirhobo commented during the week that they are back in court to continue the case which they instituted against Segun Arinze and the BoT some six months ago, stressing that the case was however adjoined till 26th of October, 2011.
His words; ‘we are back in court. The case came up today (Monday) but unfortunately, the judge was indisposed and so, it was adjoined till 26th of October, for our pending application to be heard.
The new application was a replica of the previous application that was struck out six months ago. The matter was struck out on technical grounds but two weeks after, we filed in a fresh application as the law requires.” he stated.
Continuing, the counsel stressed that “when a matter is struck out in a court of law, it does not mean that the case is dead. You have the right to return to court if you so desire. ”
“We were only asked to go back and put one or two things in place, which we have done. If a matter is dismissed, it means you cannot come back to court again, except when you wish to appeal against the judgment. We have decided to return to court.
On the forthcoming AGN general election which is billed to take place in November, this year, the counsel warned that no election should be conducted while the matter is still in court.
“Whatever election that will be conducted by Segun Arinze will be an exercise in futility. Arinze cannot give what he does not possess. He has no power to transfer, and if at the end of the day, there is an election, those who participated in such election will be wasting both their money and their time. An illegal government cannot transfer power to a legal government.” he declared.
While reacting to the threat, the guild’s Secretary General, Mr Yakabu Abubakar said, the proposed general election of the guild will hold as planned, pending when the court will rule otherwise.
Emeka had gone to court last year to challenge the leadership of Segun Arinze as the AGN president. He is praying that the court should declare an election that brought Segun Arinze into office null and void. The actor also is praying that the court should compel the BoT to appear and explain why they should remain in office.

Funke Akindele. Her name surely rings a bell. Not one given to much airs around her, she triggers off the interview by saying, “I am too down-to-earth, unassuming and I remind myself that no matter the glitz and glamour, I am still Funke Akindele.”
So, what’s new about her? Nothing, except for the fact that she is just back from New York, United States of America, where she went to have her movie, The return of Jenifa, premiered.
“I was scared before the premiere kicked off,” she recalls. Why? “I was wondering if what I had would match the expectations of the people coming to see the movie. I ran to the back of the hall and was almost shivering when it started but when I saw people laughing, with eyes glued to the screen, I knew my fears were over.”
You would not help but laugh at some of her jokes as the interview progresses. But the Ikorodu born graduate of law, who chose to be an actress instead, would not laugh at certain experiences she has gone through in her few years on stage.
“These are painful and unforgettable incidents which could have thrown me off balance,” she laments. According to Funke, who is the second in a family of four children, the media, which has celebrated her over the years, also contributed to some of her hurts.
“I was shocked to read an article that I was arrested at Heathrow for a drug related offence! Me? Drugs! Never! I was in my room in Lagos and had never travelled to London. Even whenever I did, my route was not Heathrow. I called my publicist, called everyone I knew and started telling them I was not arrested. It was not a funny experience at all,” she recalls.
She got different doses of such write-ups — alleged dates with different men and lots more. “There were moments I stayed in my room and cried. When you are in show business and you have reached a certain pedestal, you lose confidence of opening up to people on your challenges. If you do, you are the gist on every lips and journalists feast on it. So, I end up telling my hurts to God and nobody.”
That brings you to her world of being tagged a celebrity. Her story of fame would not tire you as she says: “It robs you of privacy — everyone wants to know what is happening to you, your dates, they want to have you at their parties, they want you to smile 24-7 even if you are in foul moods, they want you to be perfect and everyone believes you are not just human!
“I was at the airport sometime back and a woman came to say hello. Of course, I greeted her politely. Again, she came and I did same thing. Again, she came and I was still my smiling self. This went on like 20 times and she brought many people to see me! When it was time to board the plane, I was on a queue and suddenly had a slap on my back! It was the woman and she said, ‘Abebelube’ (Yoruba word for a more-than-smart person) and laughed. Was I hurt? I just grinned and said ‘thank you ma.’ The normal Funke Akindele would have reacted but I just reminded myself of the status. But I am human! I remember having fever, went to the clinic, was asked to run a test and as my doctor attended to me, another doctor passed by and said in everyone’s hearing that, ‘Funke Akindele came for a pregnancy test!’ Though he was joking, what if those people picked it up and the rumour spread? Even if I came for a pregnancy test, am I not entitled to my privacy? It is not too enviable a world.”
Born of parents she describes as ‘very strict’, her growing up years would not have been better. She reminisces: “I was always getting into trouble and my mother, a gynaecologist, was very strict. I was more of a tomboy and never saw myself as a girl. My father, an educationist, would not suffer fools gladly. I was like any other girl next door. It was fun and I would have remained in the comfort of my home instead of the public eye.”
It’s obvious Funke makes all efforts to retain her celebrity status by looking glamorous. “I am not finding it funny,” she says chuckling. “Naturally, I am a jeans-on-t-shirt person but now I cannot do that always. If I just wanted to make my hair, not far from my home, I have to dress up! There was a day I went to make my hair in jeans and ballet shoes and when I entered, all eyes were on me and some said I was too ordinary-looking! Even if you are not comfortable in killer heels, you wear them on red carpet! Now, I have a stylist who is in charge of what I wear, how I wear and where I wear them to. She flew with me to New York and helped with my look. Not an easy lifestyle and I see it as vain.”
My fashion fetish? I can die for good shoes. I love Vivienne Westwood a lot and Christian Louboutin. I wear any good shoes and not really out for designer labels.”
Asked how much she has spent on clothes or any fashion accessories and she answers, “I buy what I like and can’t really say that I have spent any amount on any accessories. I have clothiers who give great discounts and I also buy things anytime I am abroad.”
She confesses to be ‘doing something’ on her figure. “Even when I am trim, my tummy isn’t. I am suffering from occupational hazards because I eat late while on location and that makes your tummy bigger. Now, I have stopped eating after 7pm.”
Don’t think she is very single and shopping for a mate, as reported in some local magazines. “I have a man in my life,” she reveals. Though not emphatic on any wedding bells soon, Funke, who also writes her scripts, produces and directs her films, says: “I was surprised at that write-up because when the reporter came to me and said that my fans wanted to know when I would be married; I said, he should tell my fans to keep praying for me to get the best.”
With the Lagos premiere of The Return of Jenifa coming up, she urges youths to embrace creativity. “Anything can happen in the hands of a creative youth and that is what I always emphasise in my films. You need not sell body to get anywhere in life, make use of your potential,” she says.

Oluebube Nwagbo strikes you as the girl next door. She’s one of the most successful and hottest actresses in Nollywood at the moment. Ebube as she’s popularly called by fans has not only paid her dues in the acting profession, she has equally proved her mettle in the world of business.
Last year, she launched her own line of hair extensions called, “Posh hair” which is currently doing well in the local market. From her a recent location whilst shooting a movie, Ebube spoke about her dreams, aspirations, accomplishments and love life.
We caught you on location shooting a movie. What is about?
Yes, I’m on location in Enugu. We are shooting a new film produced by Get Rich Productions.
The movie is yet to be titled and I’m playing the role of a young girl who has to go into prostitution to save her mother’s life only for her to realize the woman in question is not her mum.
We started shooting the film which is featuring the likes of Sam Dede, Atus from Ghana, Ngozi Ezeonu and many other Nollywood stars three days ago.
Is it your first movie after the long break you took from acting?
I have done a couple of movies lately. But it’s just that some of them are yet to be released. I have about ten movies in the pipeline. It’s not as if I took a break from acting officially, but somehow, I had to find time to do other things. Perhaps to re-establish myself in the industry.
I know that I’m not going to be an actress forever. That’s why I decided to establish something I could fall back on in future because you never can predict tomorrow.
Could that be the reason for the setting up of your own line of hair extensions?
Yes, of course. My own line of hair extensions is called ‘Posh Hair.’ I also established a company which I run with my friend. We are into contract business. My hair product is doing very well in the market.
In fact, I’m surprised at the way people accepted the product. It’s quite encouraging and I’m happy it is making waves in the market.
How did you get into the business?
Before now, I was looking for something else to do apart from acting. I tried my hands on so many things before a friend of mine finally sold the idea of setting up a hair product to me.
After giving it a thought, I decided to embrace the idea. Fortunately, my friend has all the contacts I needed to make the dream a reality.
I travelled abroad with her to make all the necessary contacts before jumpstarting the business. On returning to the country, I did my own home work, meet with the people, I needed to meet with, and thereafter start off the business.
It must have cost you quite a fortune to set up the business?
Yes, and I’m thankful to God today who made it possible for me to actualize this vision.
Do you see your achievement as a big challenge to some of your colleagues who are not thinking of having second profession?
Nothing lasts forever. While we are in this business of acting, there is need for us to work hard and find something to compliment our career in acting. I have worked so hard to become what I am today.
Most of my colleagues I think are not sleeping either. They are also thinking in that direction of what they will be doing after they are through with acting. It’s important we begin to prepare for our retirement.
You also delved into gospel music. Was it another part of you that has not been explored properly?
The music aspect of me is inside the cooler for now. I might go back to it in future. I tried my hands on music and to my surprise, it worked out. Somebody wrote the songs for me and I was surprised that the music did so well in the market.
A lot of people were equally surprised that the music was a hit. I never imagined that it would be successful in the market. So yes, when I’m done with acting, I may decide to go back to music.
Some of your colleagues have described their involvement in the acting profession as accidental. Would you say you got into acting by accident?
I wouldn’t say I have always wanted to act or that I started acting from childhood. No, I have never had a passion for acting. While in school, I was a shy person.
It never beat my imagination that I could make a career in acting. It all started while I was undergoing my compulsory one year industrial training after the completion of my Ordinary National Diploma programme. I was looking for something to engage myself in as a pastime. This is because I needed money to go back to school after my industrial training.
Then, I didn’t want to work in a company. I had a friend I used to know way back in school, who was in the industry. I quickly contacted him and before I knew it, I was already in the industry.
My first movie is titled “Arrested By Love” where I acted alongside Jim Iyke, Pete Edochie and others. Acting came as an opportunity for me to get what I wanted and at the same time, achieve my dream. And in the process, I got stock.
What has been the reaction of some of your course mates who never believed you could make it in acting?
Well, some of my course mates expected to see the same old Ebube they used to know way back in school. But others are surprised that I’m doing what I’m doing today.
While I was in school, I wasn’t the bad girl type, given the strict background that I hail from. They never believed I was going to end up as an actress.
You shuttled between Lagos and Enugu. Where exactly are you based?
I’m based in Lagos, but most times when I have a job to do in the East, I travel to the place.
Being a shy person, would you say Nollywood unveiled you?
Given what I’m doing today, I’m no longer that shy girl I used to be in the past. I now see myself as an instrument to better my country and humanity. Yes, delving into acting has really changed me and I’m happy doing what I am doing today. The industry has exposed me and I have really overcome my shyness.
Also, while sojourning in the industry, I have learned a lot and I’m proud to be part of this new trend. I didn’t start acting from childhood rather; I grew to find myself in the acting profession.
Could there be anything that will make you to feel sober each time you reflect on it?
I’m an emotional person. I don’t like to be hurt or be taken for granted by people. I hate being ridiculed. I also like to earn my respect from people. I have learnt to see things the way they are.
I have also learnt to speak up my mind and stand for my right. I hate people cheating on me. Moreover, I like to respect people and I also like people to respect me. That’s me.
After your alleged affair with K.C Fresh and your purported fight with Anita Joseph over the musician, nothing much has been heard about your relationship with the opposite sex?
I have chosen not to speak about that. I don’t dwell on my past. Anything that happened in the past remains in the past. It’s my private life and I don’t like to talk about it with anybody. I never had a fight with anybody over a man and I will never do such a thing. I’m too big for that.
When are we expecting the bell to ring for you?
At the right time, I will let you know. I’m too busy making money at the moment.
Don’t you think a time will come when men will be scared of you ?
Any man who does not have the courage to come for me because of who I am is not worthy to become my man. There is no amount of wealth a woman will acquire that will make her not to be submissive to her husband. The Lord has said it that a woman should be submissive to her husband no matter the height she attains in the society.
I am who I am, I’m no other person than the same Ebube. Like I said earlier, a man that cannot walk up to me and express his love to me, is not worthy enough to be my man. I’m old enough to know when a man takes the first step.
I don’t allow whatever I have achieved over the years to get into my head. It doesn’t change who I am. People who know me very well can testify to my simple nature.
And this is not even when you are painting the town red with a hummer jeep?
I’m not the only actress who is driving a jeep. There are so many of us out there who are painting the town red with their expensive cars. Yes, sometimes people do wonder why a young lady like myself should be driving a hummer jeep.
Others still acknowledge the fact that I have a taste for quality things. But for me, I know what I wanted out of life, and also what I think will make me feel happy. If driving a hummer will make me a happy person, I’d be ready to drive it over and over again.
Looking back, do you have any cause to regret the steps you have taken in life?
I have no regrets whatsoever. I will forever be thankful to God who made it possible for me to become what I am today. Like I said earlier, nothing lasts forever. While we are still sojourning in the industry, there is need for us to make use of every opportunity that comes our way.
Are you looking forward to becoming one of the Glo Ambassadors?
I’m hopeful, but I’m not dwelling on it. If it comes, all well and good. And if it doesn’t, other things will come my way.
Nigeria is 51 years today, what’s your message to the nation?
First and foremost, I’m proud to be a Nigerian. In as much as we have our challenges, the good, the bad and the ugly, I don’t have any regret being a Nigerian. My prayer is that our leaders should strive to give the people a purposeful leadership. It is also my prayer that my industry, Nollywood overcomes the economic challenges that has undermined its growth in recent times.

THEIR INVESTMENT DETAILS:-
From the 80′s till half-way through the 90′s, nearly every household in Africa watched Western and Asian movies, but with the arrival of Nollywood in the early 90′s and the rising profile of some of Nollywood stars in the late 90′s, everything changed. Nollywood has become the talk of the day amongst African youths and many across the seven continents. As Nollywood’s status rises so does that of its actresses. Thanks to the industry, they have hit it big with endorsements, modelling, adverts and the likes, hence their being branded ‘big bucks’ divas.
*Kate Henshaw-Nuttall (N67 million)
Humble and hardworking, she is what one may call the silent millionaire. She became one of the actresses to try out other ventures. Spared by the tabloids’ bashing, the African Movie Academy 2008 Best Actress winner has graced the screen of Nigerian television like an amazon. The screen star who also has an 8-year old daughter, Gabrielle, is a business woman to the core. Although she often appears classy, she spends wisely on what she wears and only travels abroad for business rather than pleasure. She does not drive very expensive cars and she lives a purely average and normal life. The Cross River-born star has her own company which specialises in different businesses but with blas in real estate. She currently has three buildings and several landed properties scattered all over the country. By 2006 she had earned N10 million and the following year, she reached N12 million. She has never looked back since then. The warm and beautiful star is also a model, presently a Glo Ambassador and face of Onga (brand from Promasidor) and has since earned a whopping N20 million between 2008 and 2010. Plans are also underway for her to commence the production of her own movies.
*Genevieve Nnaji (N64 million)
An icon in her own world, a screen goddess and the queen of Nollywood, many describe her as an industry of her own. The Best AMAA Actress in a Leading Role in 2005, Genevieve Nnaji is arguably the most popular actress in the Nigerian make-believe movie industry called Nollywood. She has over 10,000 registered fans on her website genevievennaji.ning.com and receives about 3,000 letters from fans all over the world every week. In September 2009 American mega television talk show host Oprah Winfrey named her one of the 100 most famous people in the world. She is also by far the highest paid actress per movie and the first to earn a million naira in a single movie. By 2009 she raised the bar and she was paid $25,000 in the block buster international hit movie IJE produced by Chineze Anyaene. A model and also a singer, in 2004 she became the Face of Lux and subsequently was involved with Pronto beverage and omo detergent.
The following year she released her debut album Longolongo in Ghana, which saw her prove her versatile talents to her adoring fans all over the world. Between 2004 and 2006 she earned a whooping of N31.3 million. Major part of the money N14.7 million came from her two-year deal with Lux ($100,000). With no great interest in real estate she decided to dive into the fashion industry. She launched her clothing line St. Genevieve in 2008 which is presently being managed by fashion icon Zizi Cardow. St.Genevieve is reportedly worth N20 million. There is no doubt that she would have been topping this list with a great margin if she eventually got the Glo deal. She became the first to be contacted by Globacom, but she demanded N50 million while globacom wanted to sign her on for N30 million. She’s reported to have tried later to salvage the deal, but she had already lost it.
The event also saw her sack her manager of 3 years. Unknown to her, Glo had already decided to involve other Nollywood actresses before contacting her. Rather than stopping after the loss of the Glo deal, the star decided to step it up and show her fans the daring side of hers. 2010 has seen her feature in some of the best movies ever seen in Nollywood and that includes Ije, Bursting Out, Mirror Boy and Tango With Me. 2010 has also seen her become the face of MUD cosmetics. She also appeared in the video of D Bbanj’s hit song Fall In Love.
*Ini Edo (N60 million)
She has remained very consistent and has proved time and time again that she was born to be a star. Ini believes in landed and housing properties and has invested in this area more than any other Nollywood sister. She has five buildings to her credit and another one to be completed by the end of the year. Most of the buildings are being rented to tenants. The actress, model and producer presently has nine landed properties which she either plans to build upon, fence for keeps or lease. Five of the landed properties are in Ikotun and Ikorodu areas of Lagos State and the rest in her home state. By 2007 she had earned N15.7 million from movies and her businesses.
She has just produced her latest flick Memories Of The Heart which will be premiered in the United States. She is part of the Glo pride pack and is also part of the project to move Nollywood to another level. She is fully involved with Nollywood USA led by J. J. Bunny and has featured in the latest film by Nollywood USA titled This Is Houston.
*Rita Dominic (N58 million)
She is the best-dressed actress” according to Nollywood insiders and fans. In 2004 she won the City Peoples Award as the Most Outstanding Actress. The face of Nokia and the Glo ambassador is also a business woman. Rita has done well both as an actress and a model. Her assets include landed properties and two homes estimated to be worth over N40 million. Between 2008 and 2009, she earned N16million (most of it part of the money coming from Nokia and Glo.) She is about to launch a book and produce her own films.
*Mercy Johnson (N55 million)
When many argued whether there would be another star like Genevieve, along came the fierce and hot Mercy Johnson. At the moment she remains the most controversial actress in Nollywood. The movie, The Maid, was not enough to woo Nollywood fans to her, but 19 Mackaulay Street revealed her to be the latest Nollywood revelation. Since then she has never looked back. Many argue that the tens of movie scripts that come her way are due to the fact that she’s is not a glo ambassador, but the actresses does not see it that way.
In the past three years she appeared in more movies than any other Nollywood actress. By 2008 Mercy Johnson had appeared in fifteen movies and earned N11.4 million from movies alone. The following year, she earned N13 million and she featured in the Emen Isong hit movie Guilty Pleasures. She is also an investor in properties and she is about to complete two houses at the moment. She also owns about six landed properties in lagos.
*Omotola Jalade Ekeinde (N53 million)
She is the darling and princess of Nollywood, bold and a beauty to behold. Many believe she shares the same status with Genevieve Nnaji and together they are the two biggest actresses in Nollywood. Omotola is not your impression of an everyday business woman but what you may call a seasonal investor in whatever she develops a passion for. Although she has not featured in many movies recently, she has always proved that she is always at her best in any movie she acts in. In 2007 she grossed N9 million. Omotola takes it easy with her life and also has great passin for cars. She drives more expensive cars than any actress in Nollywood and her garage is estimated to be worth N20 million. The mother, model and musician has recently stepped up her game in the music industry.
Her first album Gba was her first introduction to the music industry but her sophomore album Me, Myself & Eyes has defined her as truly talented. The production and promotion of her album cost her a whopping N13 million.
*Patience Ozokwor (N51 million)
The Enugu star is nicknamed “Mama G’ in Nollywood. She is the oldest on the list and is notable for her tough roles in movies. ‘Mama G’ who is also a musician has been consistent in the industry and her roles have been raw energy. She is very diverse in her investments but also has several landed properties. She also started business very early.
*Uche Jombo (N50 million)
Nollywood insiders, stake holders and fans all agree that this has been Uche Jombo’s year, one in which she has razzled and dazzled many with her acting in several movies this year. The year 2010 has seen her dominate the headlines more than any other actor or actress in Nollywood. The media pictures her everywhere (although in a positive light) and she has enjoyed media hype like Genevieve Nnaji (2005) and Mercy Johnson (between 2008 and 2009). In 2008, she pocketed N10 million for her slick performances in several movies.
